THE annual Stragglers Cricket Week, which is taking place at Hartman House and St George’s College in Harare, is living to its billing with several kids embracing the tourney.
The event, which enters its fourth day today, has attracted more than 400 participants from different backgrounds.The Stragglers Smashing Cricket T-20 Tournament has now become a big event during the August school calendar.
There are almost 400 participants who include both boys and girls and they are all being supported by Stanbic Bank. The event is held through the initiative that schools sport can help lay the foundation for the discovery of future national team players.
The tournament has massive enrolment and is regarded as a platform of shaping the future for cricket with organisers putting students in groups and naming them after cricket playing countries so as to inspire them to take the game seriously.
“Such tournaments are what the nation needs to grow the sport,” said Ian Tinkler, one of the organisers. Two weeks ago, a mock cricket world cup was held at Alex Sports Club in Harare as part of efforts to inspire the young cricketers.
