Strong ties will boost development – President Mugabe

Zimbabwe and South Africa must expand their cooperation for the good of the two countries’ citizens, President Mugabe has said. The African Union and Sadc Chairman made these remarks last night at a State banquet hosted for him by South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma in Tshwane.

President Mugabe is in South Africa on a State visit at the invitation of President Zuma.

“You (President Zuma) and I have given direction, by instructing that the Joint Commission for Cooperation be elevated to a Bi-National Commission, to be co-chaired by the two Heads of State.

“A new moment must now be generated at all levels, to ensure that projects and programmes that rise to this new level are implemented timeously and effectively.”

President Mugabe also said: “We want to expand our cooperation for the good of our people. We must engage more effectively in the economic, social and cultural domains, so as to raise our bilateral relationships to new levels.”

The President also updated guests on progress in implementing ZIMASSET, the need for greater regional integration and other matters affecting the continent.

Among prominent South Africans present at the banquet were Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, Chief Justice Magoeng Magoeng, Speaker of Parliament Baleka Mbete, and ANC secretary general Cde Gwede Mantashe
