Students are the heartbeat of our climate movement and their passion and creativity are essential for driving real change, Zanu PF Youth League secretary for Commissariat, Cde Taurai Kandishaya has said.
Cde Kandishaya told students at the National Institute of Public Administration in Zambia that students’ contributions are pivotal in research, advocacy and community projects.

He was speaking on the impact of climate change on energy, food security and regional stability in the SADC region.

Cde Kandishaya said student-led initiatives have already made a significant impact, pushing for stronger climate policies and inspiring others to act.

“Your role is not just to participate but to lead, innovate and inspire a broader movement for a sustainable future,” he said.

“Our energy sector is the foundation of development and economic progress. In the SADC region, we have relied heavily on hydropower.

“But climate change is putting this vital resource at risk. Shifts in rainfall and reduced water levels are affecting hydropower efficiency, highlighting the need for a more varied energy approach.”

Cde Kandishaya said thermal power from coal and natural gas has been stable but harmful to the environment.

He said the expansion of the Hwange Thermal Power Station was a crucial step towards change.

“This project aims to increase energy production while incorporating advanced technologies to reduce emissions and improve efficiency,” Cde Kandishaya said.

“This effort demonstrates our commitment to modernising our energy sector responsibly. Renewable energy, particularly solar power, offers hope.”
