TWELVE boysa�� secondary schools are set to battle it out in a national hockey tournament that will be played at Bulawayoa��s Kumalo Hockey Stadium on Saturday.
Seasoned campaigners Falcon College, Christian Brothers, Mufakose, Hippo Valley, Petra High School, St Johna��s, St Georgiana��s, Peterhouse, Hillcrest, Watershed, Hellenic and Lomagundi are some of the academic institutions that will fight out for the top prize at the annual event.
Courtesy of Mantra Sports, the winners of the contest will get a trophy and there will be awards for the tournamenta��s Top Goal Scorer, Goalkeeper of the Tournament and Player of the Tournament.
President of Matabeleland Hockey Board (MHB), Kalpesh Parshotam said they provide technical services.
a�?As the Matabeleland Hockey Board, we are excited to be a part of this tournament.
The tournament is organised by the school system, in particular Falcon College who are the official hosts of the tournament.
As the MHB, we are going to provide technical services in the form of match officials,a�?said Parshotam.
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe hockey teams a�� Under 18 and Under 16 a�� won the SouthA� African inter-provincial tournament that was recently held in Durban.
Parshartom said: a�?We are very proud of our Zimbabwe National Hockey teams that participated at the South African Inter-Provincial Tournament (IPT) at both the Under-16 and Under-18 age groups where both teams did extremely well. We continue to encourage our young players to continue playing hockey in the junior structures before they graduate to the senior teams level.a�?
However, he confirmed that the boys did not get any financial incentives from the board.
a�?The best we can offer our boys at this stage is our support and encouragement.
Hockey is a developing sport where we continue to struggle financially and attract major sponsors for the sport,a�? Parshatom said.
