adminDANCEHALL DJ Super ‘Don Dadda’ Cat considered one of the greatest deejays of all times is set to deliver his first New York area outdoor music festival performance in over 15 years. The ‘Don Dadda’ will headline the 3rd annual Oracabessa Festival on Memorial Monday May 30, 2016 at Roy Wilkins Park in Queens, NY. The announcement was made by radio jocks Dubb Master Chris and DJ Roy of Irie Jam Radio, WVIP, 93.5FM.
Super Cat, who was christened William Anthony Maragh, achieved international fame in the late 1980s with hits songs “Cry Fi De Youth and “Boops” which sparked a slew of ‘sugar daddy’ songs. The hit parade continued in the 90s with “Don Dada”, “Ghetto Red Hot” and stateside hit “Dem No Worry We” which featured Jamaican born US rapper Heavy D.
After being signed to a major label deal with Columbia Records, Super Cat was featured on a 1992 remix of US hit single “Jump” with Kris Kross. He collaborated with the duo again in 1993 for their song “It’s Alright” which earned him the titled “Dancehall Artist of the Year” by hip-hop Source Magazine. He also collaborated on the 1993 hit single “Dolly My Bady” with The Notorious B.I.G., featuring Mary J. Blige and Puff Daddy.
Super Cat is currently being managed by legendary artiste manager and super producer Robert Livingston, who shaped his career locally and internationally, guiding him to much of his musical success over the year.
“Super Cat rarely performs in the tri-state area these day. In fact I could say he has not performed at an outdoor music festival here in the last 15-20 years” Louie Grant, Executive VP of Irie Jam Media said.
Other performers booked for the Oracabessa Festival include ‘Gully Gaad’ Mavado, ‘Mr Smooth’ Ken Boothe, Nesbeth, Vershon and Soca King Mighty Sparrow.
Elephant Man flies again! Artistes gets back US work permit
Things are definitely looking up for dancehall deejay Elephant Man. No wonder he is giving God the praise.
The deejay was recently freed from a longstanding rape chare after the alleged victim died, and then last week he was given back his work permit for the United States.
The flambouyant deejay shouted out the good news to the world on Instagram in a short clip entitled “The Lord is my light and my salvation” in which he shows off his US visa. In another video he saya: “52 states, work permit, see deh, visa up and live give, give God the glory, rain a fall, give God the glory.”
Elephant Man also mentioned his friends, selectors Tony Matterhorn and Foota Hype who are currently in the US for a string of events.
Shaggy donates JM$55m to Bustamante Hospital
Grammy-winning Jamaican singjay, Shaggy and his Shaggy and Friendsfoundation have donated JM$55 million to the Bustamante Hospital for Children. the proceeds raised by the staging of the biennial Shaggy and Friends concert in January. Though the figure is JM$15 million less than the figure raised during the 2014 edition, Shaggy expressed his satisfaction with the amount and handed over a cheque at a ceremony held at the hospital on Tuesday.
This year’s proceeds go towards improving various sections of the hospital, including the Intensive Care Unit, which currently has five beds, much less than required.
“The figure that we make is nothing compared to what we spend. What we make is a drop in the bucket from what we really need; however, we are grateful for all the support,” he said at a presser for the event.
However, Shaggy did hit out at Jamaicans living in the United States for their lack of support towards the event. This year’s edition of the Shaggy and Friends show was broadcast on iHeartRadio, a U.S.-based radio station that broadcast the show on 18 channels across the country.
Though the radio station did their part, Shaggy said the support they received from the diaspora in the U.S. was poor.
“There are over four millions Jamaicans living in the United States, more than who live in Jamaica. But the Jamaicans didn’t step up to do their part. We raised way less than we expected from them.” he said.
The Shaggy and Friends foundation received a pair of donations during Tuesday’s ceremonies; a JM$8 million donation from WATA, who released over two million specially-marked bottles in December in support of this year’s event, as well as a JM$1.5 million donation from car dealership, Stewart’s Auto.
Bustamante Hospital chairman, Kenneth Benjamin revealed during the ceremony that over 450 pieces of medical equipment have been purchased since the inception of the Shaggy and Friends concert in 2009.
“Over 77,000 children are treated at this hospital yearly. This is the only children’s hospital in the the Caribbean, so we attend to children from the region also.” he said. “Shaggy and his team has proven that they are all about making a change and not just another avenue for talk.”
