ZIMBABWE Republic Police’s Support Unit in Changadzi last year recovered goods and firearms worth $701 000 as they intensified operations to combat crime in the district.

Addressing delegates at a Changadzi District Support Unit end of year party held last weekend in Birchenough Bridge, Officer Commanding Support Unit, Senior Assistant Commissioner Dr Angelina Guvamombe, whose speech was read on her behalf by Support Unit Government Medical Officer, Assistant Commissioner George Frank, said the unit managed to raise $71 439 in revenue through fines.

According to police operational boundaries, Changadzi district covers Mashonaland East and Manicaland provinces.

“I am pleased to note that despite facing various operational and administrative challenges the district accounted for more than 5 476 for various crimes during 2015 alone, a 20 percent increase from 2014, recovered various stolen goods including firearms worth $701 644 and realised a revenue of $71 439,” she said.

Dr Guvamombe urged the unit to brace up for challenges they would face in 2016.

“The unwavering support you give to other sister branches throughout your tactical area of operation is commendable. The birth of sub-aqua section came as a great relief to your operations and their activities are being felt everywhere.

“Remain focused and brace for the challenges you would face in 2016. You should aim to achieve even more. Be vigilant because the country’s erstwhile enemies and detractors have not gone to sleep as yet.

“Their agenda will always present to us new challenges so let us be prepared to deal with them decisively as we protect and defend our country,” she added.

She implored police officers to adopt a zero tolerance stance towards corruption and stop embarrassing yourselves and the organisation.

“Do not betray the trust bestowed upon you. All bad apples will be uprooted from the organisation once caught engaging in this menace.

“The province counts on all of you, without your commitment and dedication, Support Unit can never be what it is today,” she said.

Among the five Support Unit districts, Changadzi District is responsible for Support Unit operations in Manicaland and Mashonaland East carrying out duties such as counter insurgency, anti-smuggling, anti-stock theft among other activities.

Despite a plethora of challenges, the unit has managed to embark on income generating projects such as poultry, goat raring and grinding mill.

The party saw outstanding police officers who were exceptional in their policing duties being rewarded.
