Business leaders and other stakeholders should provide support for children of war veterans since investing in their programmes is investing in the nation’s future, a Member of Parliament has said.
Speaking at a fundraising dinner for the RedRev Youth Empowerment Fund, which comprises children of war veterans, Senator Angeline Tongogara, the widow of the late Zanla military commander, General Josiah Tongogara said: “These young people are the legacy of our heroes, and we must ensure that they are equipped with the skills and resources necessary to succeed.”
She emphasised the importance of remembering the sacrifices made during the liberation struggle, particularly as Zimbabwe approaches its 45th Independence anniversary.
“We must not leave behind the children of our war veterans in our social and economic empowerment programmes,” she said.
“Forgetting them is forgetting our history and struggle as black indigenous people of Zimbabwe.”
Senator Tongogara highlighted the vital role these young people play in the nation’s future, urging attendees to invest in their potential.
“They deserve our support, our guidance, and our resources. By investing in them, we are investing in the future of our country,” she said.
She commended the fundraising dinner as a fitting tribute to the heroes and veterans of the liberation struggle and acknowledged the contributions of the Pedzisai Sakupwanya Skills Development Trust and Empower Bank in supporting the RedRev
Youth Empowerment Fund.
The senator made a direct appeal to the business community, urging them to recognise the debt owed to war veterans and their families.
“The economic freedoms that you enjoy today are the result of the sacrifices of their parents. Let us honour their legacy by supporting their children in their socio-economic empowerment,” she implored.
The RedRev Youth Empowerment Fund, established in 2018 and registered under the Companies Act (24:03), focuses on economic projects and programmes that empower the youth and children of war veterans.
The fund’s mission is to ensure that the sacrifices of Zimbabwe’s liberation war heroes are not forgotten and that their descendants are given the tools to build successful futures.
