A HONDE Valley man was hauled before a Mutare magistrate on allegations of attacking a police officer with a machete.

Stephen Chafachaipa Mashayamombe of Rori Village under Chief Samanga Honde pleaded guilty to the offence when he appeared before Mrs Sekai Chiundura.

Allegations are that on September 30 this year he struck Constable John Chikomo with the machete in a bid to resist arrest.

Mr Donald Mudadirwa prosecuted.

“On the day in question around midnight, Constables Chikomo and Mazvimba went to Rori Village to arrest the accused who had a warrant of arrest under case number C R46-47/07/14.

“Upon arrival the two met Fungai Magabu who is the uncle to the accused. Magadu proceeded to show them the room in which the accused was sleeping. Constable Chikomo then knocked on the accused’s door and the accused came out holding an axe and a machete. He started chasing Cst Mazvimba with an axe whilst Cst Chikomo was following behind.”

He then dropped the axe and started running away.

Cst Chikomo then gave chase. Seeing that he was about to be arrested Mashayamombe then struck the police officer with the machete on the left side of the rib.

However the accused denied the allegations saying that he did not know that he was attacking a police officer as the complainant was wearing civilian clothes.

The trial continues.
