Suspect flees from police custody

A MUTARE man will regret the day he decided to flee from police custody after he was slapped with a four-month jail term following his arrest.

Motion Chiengana (25) pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared in court last week.

It was the State case led by Mr Fletcher Karombe that on February 25, Chiengana was arrested in connection with stealing a HP laptop.

Chiengana was arrested by two detectives, Obey Landulana and Owen Chitukula.

Around 7:20pm, Chiengana removed the handcuffs and ran away from the police officers who failed to locate him.

Chiengana went to seek refuge at his mother-in-law’s homestead in Chigodora.

The following day, the detectives questioned Chiengana’s wife who spilled the beans on her husband’s whereabouts.

The detectives followed him in Chigodora where they found him sleeping in a spare bedroom at his mother-in-law’s place.

Asked why he committed the offence, Chiengana said he had left his family starving, so he wanted to find them something to eat.

“Your Worship, I was worried about my family’s welfare. There was no food, even porridge for my child,” he said.
