Suspected pangolin skin dealers in court

A HEIST that was never to be.

Tama Muleya (28), Enerst Komonde (36) and Clive Komonde (38) from Kelamenda village under Chief Sikalenge in Binga were arrested when found in possession of pangolin skin trophies worth $10 000.

They were rounded up after a tip-off to the Zimbabwe Wildlife Authority by a villager. When the net closed in they were taken into police custody but one of the accused Makapula Mugande jumped off a moving vehicle and is still at large.

The other three have since appeared before  Binga magistrate Talent Phiri facing charges of contravening section 45 (1) (b) as read with section 128 (1) (b) of the Parks and Wildlife Act chapter 20:14 for unlawful possession of pangolin trophy skins.

For the State, prosecutor Bruce Maphosa said on 26 September along the Binga- Dete road near the Simatelele turn off the accused were found in possession of two pangolin trophies weighing 2 720 kilogrammes and 2 020 kilogrammes and length of 83 cm and 74, 5 cm without a permit.

They were remanded in custody without bail  pending trial.
