Trainer Debra Swanson will once again dominate this year’s Castle Tankard Horse Race show with eight runners out of the confirmed 16.
The grand finale for the prestigious horse show now in its 65th edition will take place on May 10 at the traditional venue, the Borrowdale Racecourse.
Running under the theme, “The Legacy Continues”, this year’s show will see five different yards competing for the high stakes now set at US$50 000.
Speaking at the final acceptance, Mashonaland Turf Club chairperson Scott Buchan, believes this year’s race will be exciting due to the high stakes.
“We are grateful for our main sponsors Delta Corporation for being there for us through these years and their commitment fuels each and every one of these runners to do better.
“We wish all the runners the best and we are looking forward to an exciting Tankard Day,” said Buchan.
Speaking at the same event, Delta Lagers marketing manager, Kundayi Mawema said they are happy to preserve a proud legacy for all Zimbabweans.
“The Castle Lager’s long-standing sponsorship of the Tankard, which is more than just a partnership; is a commitment to keeping the spirit of horse racing alive in Zimbabwe.
“Through the combination of our support, and the ongoing efforts of the Mashonaland Turf Club, we have helped sustain and grow this sport, preserving a proud legacy that belongs to all Zimbabweans,” she said.
Mawema added that they feel honoured to be associated with the biggest horse race in Africa.
“This year is especially meaningful to us at Delta Beverages, as we celebrate 130 years of brewing excellence for our Flagship brand Castle Lager.
“Therefore, it is only fitting that our iconic beer Castle Lager − a brand that has stood the test of time − continues to be matched with an iconic race like the Castle Tankard which embodies the same,” she said.
As part of the celebrations, organisers have also roped in superstar Alick Macheso to headline the after party.
The sungura giant will share stage with rising newcomer, Oriyano, who has quickly won the hearts of many music lovers, Enzo Ishall, Delroy Shewe, Nisha Ts and Chillspot Family.
“Spectators can look forward to ice-cold beers, sizzling braais and an electrifying lineup.
“This year’s Castle Tankard promises to be an unforgettable experience, a day of unity, excitement , and world class racing,” she said.
