Opera took centre stage in Bulawayo as a vibrant crowd gathered for the Sweet Melodies Opera Competition held in the city on Friday, where contestants delivered powerful vocal performances.
From 46 performances, standout acts emerged across categories. In the Soprano Solos (Set Piece: I Feel Pretty), Faith Mabika claimed first place followed closely by Sithabile Sharon Bhebhe and Nobuhle Kanye. The Alto Solos (Set Piece: Caro Mie Ben) produced the highest score of the competition, with Grace Ndlovu winning ahead of Tatenda Judith Mupemhi.
In the Tenor Solos (Set Piece: Every Valley), Aaron Runesu topped the category, while Melusi Sikhosana came second. The Bass Solos (Set Piece: Rejoice Oh Judah) saw Manuelle Mainje take first place narrowly edging Leeroy.
The atmosphere remained electric throughout the event, with audiences cheering each rendition. Reflecting on the performances, the MC remarked that nature’s finest instrument is the human voice, a sentiment echoed in the quality displayed on stage.
Alto winner Grace Ndlovu highlighted the importance of such platforms.
“The competition was amazing. I enjoyed every performance and all the contestants brought fireworks on stage. Such competitions are very important as they give people a platform to grow and showcase their talent and gain recognition from various sponsors.
“I appreciate the initiative brought by the Sweet Melodies Chorale,” Ndlovu said.
Contestant Lubalenkosi Mdluli described the experience as life-changing.

“The Sweet Melodies Opera Competition is the best thing that has ever happened in my life. I love music, but I never knew that at my age I could be recognised and given an opportunity to shine among others. I am a Grade 7 pupil at Mahlathini Primary School in Cowdray Park and Sweet Melodies has exposed me to the world of organised music. I’m confident that my future in the industry is bright.”
Tenor performer Melusi Sikhosana also reflected on the journey.
“The competition was tough. I never thought I would make it, but, surprisingly, my hard work paid off. Hard work truly pays. All the glory goes to God, who carried me through the difficult period of preparation, and to everyone who came to support us as participants. To all the contestants, I encourage you to keep working hard and let your voices shine.”
Event organiser Tapiwa Sithole expressed satisfaction with how the competition unfolded.
“This competition was a success, everything went according to our plan. We thank God for that. We received new talent from Matabeleland. Our competition was really a tough one in all categories. Our participants were really ready for the competition,” he said.
