THE Bulawayo Swimming Championships have been moved to next weekend after a swimmer tested positive for Covid-19.

The championships had already gotten off to a rocky start as the greater part of the 1500m freestyle races that had been scheduled for Monday were postponed due to lightning.

Bulawayo Amateur Swimming Association chairperson, Nokuthula Cyprianos said the championships will now be held next week.

“We have been forced to postpone the championships after one of the swimmers returned a positive result to Covid-19.

“We are taking all the necessary measures to ensure all swimmers are safe from the pandemic hence we had to postpone the championship.

“Unfortunately, she had contact with swimmers from the club hence all swimmers have to isolate for 14 days,” she said.

A swimmer from one of the province’s clubs tested positive during the week.

The swimmer is reportedly linked to the cases that erupted at Girls College during the week.

Meanwhile, Stingrays Swimming Academy is basking in glory after 25 of their swimmers made new records during the BASA short course event that was held a fortnight ago.

A total of 30 records were made during the event.

Among the new record holders were Tichatonga Makaya who set a new record in the 14-year-olds 50m butterfly race among others, completing the race in 27.49 to eclipse Peter Wetzler’s 29.58 seconds.
