SOUL City nightclub doorman, Farai “Talawa” Kasecha, was recently re-elected as the Manicaland Body-building and Fitness Association (MBBFA) chairperson. National Federation of Zimbabwe Body-building and Fitness (NFZBBF) members came down to Mutare a fortnight ago to preside over an emotive election process that ended up seeing credible candidates refusing to take up posts, while Kasecha and his cabal of ghetto youths were grudgingly once again given the mandate to run the affairs of the sport in the province.
Innocent Mukahanana was elected vice-chairperson, while Aaron Chinyamunzore was voted the secretary, with Rutendo Khozamoyo coming in as the vice-secretary.
Although he indicated that he would not be available for meetings owing to a busy business schedule, body-building and pool enthusiast Steven Chingwingwi was named the association’s treasurer and he will be deputised by Danai Zhangano. Knowledge Nyamhoka was named provincial organising committee head, while Ronnie Makore was appointed head of the strongman competition.
Nhamo Rusinga will be in charge of Olympic Games preps.
By his own admission, Kasecha said his previous tenure was not an easy one as he faced challenges in attracting sponsorship and raising the profile of body-building in the province.
“We really had a difficult time during the previous tenure. Sponsors were hard to come by. We could not reward our body-builders as much as we wanted.
“We also could not attract body-builders during out contests as we had three contestants for the main event as well as juniors in our provincial premier competition — Mr and Ms Manicaland,” he said while giving his report of his previous term in office.
Ironically, the re-elected MBBFA chairman told The Weekender in an interview that they are now geared to improve the state of the sport in the province.
“We want to have three contests this year — Mr Dangamvura in June, Mr Sakubva in July and Mr Manicaland before the end of August.
“We urge all body-builders to prepare in time and we also call upon sponsors to chip in and help us.
“In the same breadth, we really call for unity of purpose among all those in the body-building industry. This time we want to have more than three participants per category like we had last year,” said Kasecha.
The process and outcome of elections in Manicaland could end up being a big let-down to efforts to resuscitate and strengthen NFZBBF.
Upon their election into office, NFZBBF vowed to put their house in order and installed some provincial representatives who sit on the board that includes Harare chairman Keith Chirimanzi, Guy Ngwarati (Mashonaland West), Ntokozo Mahlangu (Matabeleland South), Simon Gama (Bulawayo) and Farai Verenga, the Mashonaland East chairman.
Several sub-committees were also set up at the meeting held at Bodytech Gym in Harare that saw Gerald Chitsa being put at the helm of the finance and resource mobilisation committee, Danny De Souza heads the judges committee with Sibangani Guzha in charge of the fitness committee.
The organising sub-committee is led by Patrick Zwaremba, George Master is leading the disciplinary committee and Shangai is heading the media liaison, communications and public relations committee.
