Talent galore at Chibuku Road to Fame finals

THE annual Chibuku Road to Fame national finals were successfully held recently at the Glamis Arena in Harare.

The event was a culmination of provincial competitions conducted throughout the country.

Music enthusiasts welcomed the revival of the competition following a three-year Covid-19-induced hiatus.

“I always look forward to this event every year. I have never missed a single edition since 2008. Apart from watching our favourite stars in action, we also get the chance to assess the new talent we have in the country,” said Misheck Muderedzwa, a fan.

Mashonaland West-based Afro-fusion and jazz contemporary outfit Grade 2D emerged the winners. The group pocketed US$15 000.

In second position were The Grooves from Midlands, who received US$10 000.

Matabeleland North’s Shantani Musical Band was in third place, and was awarded US$7 000.

Reginald Kamuchanyu, a Grade 2D representative, said their victory was long overdue, especially for a group that has been working hard since 2014.

“Winning this year’s competition is amazing. This should be an encouragement to others. Whatever people say, stay true to your mission and vision as an individual or group,” he said.

Competition was stiff as all the groups that represented the country’s 10 provinces delivered polished acts.

“It is unfortunate that there are only three slots for winners. I feel it is important for studio owners and music promoters to attend such events to identify talent,” said Priscilla Mutero, a fan.

“Competitions are technical in nature, hence some groups or individuals may not win yet they will be extremely gifted. We certainly have talented singers coming through the ranks.”

A star-studded line-up that included Winky D, ExQ, Tocky Vibes, Mark Ngwazi, Baba Harare, Godfather Templeman, DJ Mbali and the 2019 Chibuku Road to Fame winners, Identity Band, took turns to entertain thousands of revellers.

This year’s event coincided with the 60th Chibuku anniversary celebrations.

Since its inception in 2001, Chibuku Road to Fame has nurtured the talents of sungura artistes such as Romeo Gasa and Tendai Ngwazi.
