TALKING THE MIK

ARSENAL will hold fresh talks with Mikel Arteta over signing a new contract at the end of the season.

New Champions League finalist manager Arteta currently sees his deal expire at the end of next season, in June 2027.

It is now reported that the club are keen to negotiate an extension over the summer after preliminary discussions already took place.

Spaniard Arteta, 44, led the Gunners to a first UCL final in 20 years after beating Atletico Madrid 1-0 on Tuesday (2-1 on aggregate).

And Arsenal chiefs are determined to tie him down with just over 12 months remaining on his £10million-a-year deal left.

The Times say that senior club figures are backing the former midfielder to deliver success after supporting him in the transfer window to the tune of over £700million.

Despite the enormous outlay in recent years, his only piece of silverware since taking over in 2019 remains that season’s FA Cup, but serious progress has been made.

Arsenal are three games away from securing a first Prem title since 2004 – and may not even need to win all of those depending on Manchester City’s results.

They will also face PSG in Budapest for the chance to lift the Champions League for the first time ever.

Arteta and Arsenal only returned to Europe’s top table in 2023-24 but have gone from quarter-finalists that year – losing to Bayern Munich – to the semis in 2024-25, and now the final. — Sun
