FORMER Highlanders defender Andrew Tandi has taken another significant step in rebuilding his life after football after joining Focus Sport Management as a representative, marking the latest chapter in a journey that has seen him embrace opportunities beyond the pitch.
The former Bosso centre-back, whose promising career was derailed by a career-altering leg injury suffered against Dynamos in 2022, has gradually shifted his focus towards life after playing while remaining deeply connected to the game that shaped him.
His appointment at Focus Sport Management comes at a time when he is also investing in his future as a coach, pursuing coaching badges as he prepares for the next phase of his football journey.
Speaking about his new role, Tandi said he was excited to remain involved in football while helping shape the careers of young players.
“This is an exciting new chapter in my life. Football has given me so much over the years and I feel this is the right time to start giving back in a different way. Joining Focus Sport Management allows me to remain close to the game while helping young players make the right decisions both on and off the field. I have experienced the highs and the lows of football, so I believe I can share valuable lessons with the next generation,” said Tandi.
Earlier this year, Tandi spoke candidly about how the devastating injury changed his outlook on life and forced him to think beyond his playing days. While he still hoped to continue playing, he admitted the setback had opened his eyes to the importance of preparing for a second career.
That preparation is now beginning to bear fruit.
At Focus Sport Management, Tandi is expected to use his experience as a former professional footballer to work closely with players, offering guidance and helping them navigate the demands of the modern game.
Having experienced both the highs of playing for one of Zimbabwe’s biggest clubs and the lows of a lengthy rehabilitation, he is well placed to understand the challenges athletes face on and off the field.
Tandi said he was equally determined to build a future in coaching and had already started pursuing coaching qualifications.
“At the same time, I have started working towards my coaching badges because coaching is something I have always wanted to do. My dream is to stay in football for many years, whether it is mentoring players, coaching or contributing to the development of the game. This is just the beginning of another journey and I am looking forward to learning and growing,” he said.
Tandi built a reputation as a composed and dependable defender during his time at Highlanders, where he formed a formidable partnership with Peter Muduhwa in the heart of the Bosso defence.
Many believed he was entering the prime of his career before the serious injury abruptly changed its trajectory.
Rather than allowing the setback to define him, Tandi has chosen to reinvent himself.
His move into sports management, coupled with his pursuit of coaching qualifications, reflects a desire to remain involved in football in different capacities while helping the next generation of players make informed decisions about their careers.
The transition also highlights a growing trend among former footballers who are seeking opportunities away from
the pitch without completely walking away from the sport.
For Tandi, football remains at the centre of his life, only that his role is evolving.
Whether representing players, mentoring young talent or one day occupying the technical area as a qualified coach, the former Highlanders defender is determined to continue contributing to the game.
It is a new challenge, but one that appears perfectly suited to a man whose resilience has already been tested.
The road from injury to reinvention has not been straightforward, yet Tandi continues to prove that setbacks do not have to define a career.
