circumcise two million men by 2015, but only 55 000 have so far been circumcised.
According to the panel, which included chairperson of the Zimbabwe Parliamentarians Against Aids Mr Blessing Chebundo, the majority of African countries are far from reaching the global target.
“This slow action has meant that the potential benefits of VMMC may not been realised any time soon in these countries,” said the panel.
It said Kenya was just past the half way mark towards achieving its target of 860 000 by 2015, but recently, fewer men have been showing up to get circumcised in that country.
Uganda, with a target of more than four million circumcisions by 2015, has managed just over 200 000 and Zambia has only conducted just over 200 000 of the targeted two million. “VMMC can play a major role in bringing down HIV infections in our communities and our countries,” said the panel.
