A VICTORIA Falls taxi driver, who evaded arrest for eight months after allegedly running over three pedestrians and fleeing from the scene, has been charged with negligent driving and failure to stop after an accident.

Details of the extent of the victims’ injuries could not be ascertained yesterday as the court still awaits a medical report from Victoria Falls District Hospital.

Simanego Roger Muleya (42) of Mkhosana suburb once appeared in court but defaulted and kept evading arrest.

Muleya finally handed himself over to the police on Monday.

He appeared before Victoria Falls Magistrate, Ms Rangarirai Gakanje who cancelled his warrant of arrest.

Muleya, known as “Alacarte” in the taxi business, told the court that he defaulted because he had gone for a job interview and decided not to attend court.

Ms Gakanje said the court will proceed by way of summons as the State is yet to secure medical reports in respect of the three accident victims — Messrs Polite Muzamba, Nkosilathi Ndebele and Talent Nyoni.

Prosecutors allege that Muleya was speeding when he hit the victims on April 10.

“The accused was driving a Toyota Gaia in Mkhosana suburb just after midnight,” said the prosecutor, Mr Listen Nare.

“The accused person hit three pedestrians who were walking on the far right side of the road and going in the same direction as the vehicle,” said the prosecutor.

The three victims were rushed to hospital while Muleya sped off in the vehicle.
