Taxi driver-turned-armed-robber slapped with 13-year jail term

Tongai Munetsi (40) who was employed by P Goko Taxis appeared before regional magistrate Mr Adonia Masawi.
Mr Masawi sentenced him to 15 years imprisonment of which eight months were suspended on condition of restitution.
A further 14 months were suspended on condition of good behaviour.

The first complainant is Monalisa Mhlanga who is employed by Kipps.
The agreed facts are that on June 19 this year, Munetsi and his accomplice, who is still at large hatched, a plan to rob people of their belongings and armed themselves with a pistol.

They drove to Westgate in their get away vehicle, a black Toyota Raum, which Munetsi used as a taxi.
Around 5.30pm, the complainant disembarked from a commuter omnibus and Munetsi’s accomplice came out of the taxi armed with a pistol and pointed it at the complainant demanding her handbag.

The complainant threw it towards him and he grabbed it before firing one shot into the air, got into the taxi and sped off.
The handbag contained a cellphone, a gold wrist watch and agreements of sale for three residential stands.
The complainant made a report at Westgate Police Station.

On June 23 at about 1000hr, Masawi was arrested while trying to rob Priscilla Gwanzura who is a sales lady at Spell Bound Investments.
It is alleged that the two went to the shop in question along Kaguvi Street and ordered the complainant to surrender all the airtime.

They fired one shot in the air and another on the wall, ordering the complainant to surrender all the airtime.
The complainant panicked and shouted for help and an alert motorist Richard Ziwachi who heard the complainant shouting for help saw Munetsi’s accomplice running from the shop and gave chase.

He managed to block the vehicle along Jason Moyo Avenue.
Munetsi’s accomplice fled from the scene but he was apprehended by Ziwachi.
