He died in a horrific car accident on Sunday in South Africa, which also claimed his girlfriend’s life.
Playboy, like many who had relocated to South Africa, was said to have been producing and holding shows.
TBA was one of the most humble and simple producers you would ever meet but with a very big talent that will be difficult to replace.
His death is surely a big knock on our music industry as the man helped to shape what we now call urban grooves – the hottest music genre in the country at the moment. The man defined what we now call ‘swag’ or what we used to call ‘flamboasting’ with his flashy ways and very cool demeanour, which also endeared him with many fans mainly females.
Though I wasn’t very close to the man who liked to dub himself To Be Anointed, the few times I collided with him were just good moments to be treasured. Playboy, was a good producer and I still remember the masterpiece “Chigutiro”, which he produced and still stands as one of the best urban grooves albums ever.
However, the circumstances in which he gave me the tape make it all so sentimental to me as it gave a totally different picture from what some people said about him.
I just called Playboy one morning asking for an interview on his “Chigutiro” album and the man promised to be at my workplace in a jiffy, though he was still at the studio. The man took some time to reach me and when he came he was all apologetic telling me that he was late because he had been up and down town searching for the “Chigutiro” tape in the record bars but to no avail.
That showed me a different side from what we see from these other producers who are even willing to force you to buy their tapes when you are reviewing their works. Playboy was just different and like all great producers he let his works do all the talking and you will agree with me in that we have just lost a gem.
Although he wasn’t very productive during the last few days due to his residency in South Africa, TBA was still producing good music.
May his soul rest in peace and I know the proteges he left will keep up the good work, churning out hit after hit like the good late man did.
On another note, I met Winky D’s manager Jonathan Banda sometime this week and the man was fuming at the way his mate is being treated by the local promoters here. Word doing the roundsis that the local dancehall king Winky was going to perform at the weekend gig, which shall be featuring Jamaican dancehall superstar Mr Vegas.
However, Banda or Major as he is known in the streets said they pulled out of the deal after seeing the second rate treatment they were being given. Winky D now has now grown and plays with a live band and for one to ask him to use backtracks is just but a travesty of justice said Major.
They would have loved to play at the Mr Vegas show, which I know shall be heavily attended, but they felt they were not given a fair platform to showcase their talents.
If the headlining Mr Vegas can be given the forum to play with a live band why not give the same opportunity to Winky D, was Major’s argument.
Major feels local promoters are giving them a raw deal and treated like dirt always playing second fiddle when these foreign acts come here.
However, Major says Winky D is a man on a mission and very soon they shall be giving the people a Christmas present which shall take long for people to forget.
“We don’t care about Babylon and all the stuff, we shall not be used at all but to our friends we promise you a good album before Christmas,” boasted Banda.
