TEACHERS and other stakeholders from the country’s 10 provinces have gathered at Phelandaba Stadium in Gwanda Matabeleland South for the national commemorations of World Teachers Day.

Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerai Moyo is set to officiate at the event.
World Teachers’ Day is held annually on 5 October to celebrate teachers worldwide and their impact in society.

It commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/ UNESCO recommendation concerning the status of teachers, which sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions.

The recommendation concerning the status of higher education teaching personnel was adopted in 1997 to complement the 1966 recommendation by covering teaching personnel in higher education.

World Teachers’ Day has been celebrated since 1994.
This year, World Teachers’ Day celebrations will centre on the theme “Recasting teaching as a collaborative Profession-Invest in Teachers-Invest in Quality education.”

Reframing teaching as inherently collaborative – supported by policies, practices, and environments that value mutual support, shared expertise, and joint responsibility – is essential to strengthen teaching, learning, and teachers’ professional fulfilment.
