Team Zimbabwe finishes fourth at AUSC youth games

ZIMBABWE finished in overall fourth position at the just ended African Union Sports Council Region Five Youth Games in Lilongwe, Malawi. 

The games which concluded at the weekend saw the country attain 12 gold medals, 24 silver and 13 bronze medals making a total of 84 medals. 

Zimbabwe claimed three gold medals in athletics, six in tennis, two in swimming and one in volleyball.

In athletics, they got seven silver medals, one in judo, gymnastics, taekwondo and five in tennis. Swimming had the most silver medals with 10.

In terms of bronze medals, Zimbabwe had 13 in athletics, two in boxing and gymnastics, one in netball and volleyball, 14 in swimming and nine in taekwondo.

South Africa claimed poll position with a total of 111 medals that consisted of 61 gold, 28 silver and 22 bronze medals.

This year’s event ran under the theme “Igniting the African Dream”. 

The games attracted 10 countries from the African Union Sports Council Region 5 and these are host Malawi, South Africa, Mozambique, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia and Angola.

Seychelles, Mauritius and Tanzania also joined in other sporting disciplines. 

Zimbabwe was represented in athletics (mainstream and for the visually impaired), basketball, boxing, judo, gymnastics, taekwondo, netball, tennis and volleyball.

The Zimbabwean team had 205 athletes.
