SOME teachers from Reigate District had their technological challenges exposed on Friday after they failed to properly operate a computer resulting in one of them deleting all the first day’s athletics results at White City Stadium. An IT expert had given the two announcers a laptop which they were supposed to use in announcing the results as they came, as is the norm in international events but instead of pressing the scroll down button, one of the teachers apparently pressed the delete button and in a flash all the data stored was gone.
“Fortunately we had saved the data in a separate server,” said the IT expert who was part of the technical team during the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Under-20 Youth Games last December.
They were using the same system used by the Belgian athletics timing giant company, TimeTronics.
One of the teachers later said there was need for them to be properly trained so that they move along with changes in technology.
Meanwhile, the district team will gather at Northlea High School to begin its preparations for the district finals which will be held at White City Stadium next month.
Amos Musademba, St Columbas High School sports director, confirmed the development.
“We meet at Northlea High School on Monday (today) to start our training for the provincials,” he said.
Trainers will need to up their tempo after poor times were recorded at inter-schools competitions last week. There is need for the organisers to also stick to times so that athletes are not made to run under high temperatures as that has negative effect on times, especially long distances.
