Teen cricketer excels in Benoni

ZIMBABWE Under-13 right-handed batsman Wesley Madhevere stole the show at the just-ended Eastern Junior Cricket Club Association Festival in Benoni, South Africa.
The 12-year-old was impressive with a performance that saw him being named batsman of the tournament in his age group after scoring three half centuries.
Madhevere, who is a product of St Aiden’s Primary School in Chitungwiza, is being tipped to develop into an accomplished batsman in the future.

Zimbabwe Cricket national development manager, Nick Singo, said Madhevere had the natural talent to become a big star and praised the association’s efforts to identify and nurture talent from the grassroots.

“He is a very promising youngster and with the right support and guidance he will make the headlines,” said Singo.
“We would like to thank the (ZC) board for the support being given to the development of the game from the junior structures, which is a positive sign that we are looking into the future of Zimbabwean cricket.”

Singo travelled with the team on their recent trip.
However, the teenage batsman almost missed the tour because he had no travel documents.

ZC then helped him obtain a passport just a week before the team left.
The teenager’s mother, Clara Madhevere, was naturally overwhelmed.

“I feel great, Wesley has done us proud,” she said.
Zimbabwe took the Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17 teams to the tournament which was hosted at the Sahara Park Willowmoore Cricket Grounds in Benoni.
The tournament also featured teams from Botswana, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia.
