An 18-year-old Silobela man will spend the next 15 years in jail for raping his 85-year-old grandmother. The man from Rungu Village, Chief Malisa, Lower Gweru, was convicted on his own plea by Gweru regional magistrate Mr Morgan Nemadire. He will however serve an effective 12 years in jail after Mr Nemadire suspended three years on condition of good behaviour.

The accused pleaded with the court to be lenient, blaming the devil for using him. “Your worship may you exercise leniency on me. I’m a very young man. I still want to pursue my studies, I think I was used by the devil. Even right now I’m still shocked that I’m the one who did such an evil thing,” he said.

Prosecuting, Mr Kelvin Guveya told the court on May 16 this year at around 11PM, the elderly woman was sleeping alone in her bedroom when she heard someone knocking on the door. He said she opened the door and the accused entered the room.

The court heard that the accused grabbed his grandmother and ripped off her undergarments.

He then raped her once.

The accused fled after committing the crime.

The complainant reported the rape to her neighbour and the following day she reported the rape to the police leading to the accused’s arrest.
