FIRST Class Academy student, Vimbai Makuvaza, turned on the heat to outplay competitors in the Zimbabwe Closed table tennis tournament played at Prince Edward High school in Harare last weekend. Makuvaza, who was one of the four players that represented Manicaland at the tournament, snatched pole position in a tightly contested Under-21 category.
In an interview this week, the First Class Academy Lower Sixth student said she was happy with her performance.
“I am happy that I managed to win the competition. It was not easy and competition was stiff. There were quite a number of talented players, but I am happy that I managed to give it my best shot and won,” she said.
Fellow Manicaland representative, Mlungisi Moyo settled for third position in the Under-21 men’s competition, but went on to land fourth position in the Open Men category.
Another player from Manicaland, Raphael Gopito came third in the Open Men category, while the fourth Manicaland representative, Simbarashe Teererai came third in the Under-21 men contest.
Manicaland Table Tennis Association technical director, William Machacha, also praised the four provincial representatives for an impressive performance. Machacha announced that there will be another competition to be held in Mutare in August.
“I was really impressed with the way my players performed. It gives us hope for a better future in table tennis in the province. However, I urge table tennis players to continue practising and working hard.
“In fact, we are going to have another tournament in August here in Mutare. It will be held on August 1 and 2. The tournament is meant to select players that will represent the country in the Zone Six games to be held in Namibia in December,” he said.
