An old African proverb says he who steals a calabash of milk must carry the cow. For an 18-year-old Northend man, that cow has now kicked him straight into prison.
Tafadzwa Chakwana has been caged for stealing tools worth US$634.
Chakwana, who worked at Superb Riches Mining Gold Milling and Chemicals, appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Challenge Mahembe, who handed down a tough lesson in crime and consequence.
The court heard that on 9 September 2025, Chakwana spotted an open fence and decided to test his luck at Learnmore Chidziwa’s shed.
Prosecutor Veronica Manyuka told the court that the teenager sneaked inside and helped himself to a treasure trove of tools.
His haul included an Innco electric drill, a cordless drill, a Bosch electric drill, two baby grinders and an electric router.
Sadly for the complainant, none of the stolen property was recovered, leaving Chidziwa counting losses while Chakwana counted court dates.
The magistrate showed no mercy.
Chakwana was slapped with a 24-month jail sentence, with three months suspended for good behaviour and eight months suspended on condition of restitution.
That means the teenage thief will spend 13 months learning hard lessons behind concrete walls.
