Teenager commits suicide over $10

Nyanga Correspondent
A DISPUTE over non-payment of $10 rent saw a Nyanga Form Four student committing suicide last Friday. Munyaradzi Madziva, who was doing Form Four at Mapako Government School and was a tenant at Nyamutsambira Shop at Mapako Business Centre, committed suicide after the landlord had asked him to settle his rent arrears. He allegedly became furious and threatened to stab him with a knife.

Police confirmed the suicide and said investigations were in progress. Fearing for his life, the landlord ran away and went to make a report at Ruchera Police Base.
It is alleged that when Munyaradzi learnt about the landlord’s decision to make it a police report he fled to his parents’ house in Nyamhuka 1.

His mother, Zvikomborero Timburwa, said upon arrival, her son told her that he wanted to commit suicide after explaining what had happened the previous day. “He would run away each time l tried to counsel him not to commit suicide. He told everyone he met that Friday morning that he wanted to take his life, but nobody took him seriously. I was later called from the market by a neighbour who had become suspicious after discovering that Munyaradzi had spent a long time ‘sleeping’ in the garden. “
