A family from Pumula East suburb was left shocked as they ended the year devastated after a teenage daughter swindled her mother of $1 000 claiming she got a scholarship to study abroad.

The teenager had forged some documents which showed that she had been offered a scholarship to study in Poland.

She showed the documents to her mother who without a doubt tried all means to find the money and gave her daughter the money so that she could pay the necessary fees needed for the scholarship. The money was also going to be used to buy new clothes and electronic accessories like laptops and new phone.

The matter came to light when her mother got a tip-off that her daughter was planning to skip the country to follow her boyfriend to South Africa. She got the tip from one of her daughter’s friends who was against the whole idea. The mother quickly alerted the police and family members.

The teenager was apprehended and detained by the police. She revealed the whole truth and that she wished she was with her boyfriend because they were in love.

B-Metro caught up with the mother of the teenager who revealed her disappointment over her daughter and that she was planning to send her to the village to her grandmother and uncle so she could be counselled.

‘‘At first I couldn’t believe it when I heard it. I am very disappointed in her, she broke my heart and it will take time for me to forgive her,’’ said the mother.

‘‘I’m going to send her to the village to her grandmother and uncle so that they teach her to be disciplined,’’ she added.

The teenager had paid $100 to one of her friends to forge the documents which indicated she was going abroad and that a minimum of $1 000 was needed for her to be eligible to get the scholarship.

One of her relatives said they never thought she could pull off a stunt like that as she had passed her O-level with flying colours.

However, $310 has since been recovered and some of the new clothes bought by the teenage girl were taken away from her.
