Telecel Zimbabwe will not be renewing contracts for hundreds of its employees across the nation as part of its cost cutting measures.
Most of the contract workers are those that had been engaged to work on the rollout of Telecash.
Telecel’s brand and communications director Mr Obert Mandimika confirmed the development saying they will not be renewing 250 contracts for employees under their commercial department.
“We do have contract employees who were specifically hired on a six month contract for subscriber acquisition campaign towards Telecash, some 250 of these will be affected but we will engage them in the future if the need arises,” said Mr Mandimika
TechnoMag managed to establish that Telecel has approximately 500 contract employees campaigning for the brand.
Job cuts in the telecoms sector are imminent as technology and converged systems have reduced revenue streams from the conventional GSM based phone calls.
Instant messaging apps like whatsapp, skype and viber have also resulted in millions of subscribers opting for messaging sevices as opposed to voice calls.
Telecel has been aggressively campaigning for their new mobile money service, Telecash, a service which is competing against Ecocash and One Wallet.
Telecash has a slight advantage in that it has the capacity to interconnect all mobile network operators under a ZimSwitch based system running on slightly lower transaction charges.
Zimbabwe`s mobile network operators on the GSM system have resorted to finding new Value Added Service (VAS) as way to keep revenue levels up such as mobile money.
According to the most recent report from the national regulator, Postal and Telecommunication Regulating Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ ), Telecel is Zimbabwe`s second biggest mobile network operator with 2,5million subscribers.
