State-owned fixed telecommunications operator TelOne and its employees have donated goods worth US$10 000 to victims of flooding in Tokwe-Mukosi. Among the goods donated were two tonnes of mealie-meal, 300 litres of cooking oil, 600kg of sugar, 100kg of sugar beans, 10 boxes of soap, dried kapenta, salt, soya chunks, 200 blankets, exercise books, 20 tents, clothes and shoes.

TelOne managing director Mrs Chipo Mutasa handed over the goods to Deputy Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Joel Biggie Matiza on Monday.

At the handover ceremony, Mrs Mutasa rallied the nation to assist those in need.

“This move was also a way of heeding to calls by Government for all to assist those that have been affected,” she said.
Deputy Minister Matiza said the donation by TelOne was noble.

“This gesture is peculiar and unique in that it involved all the staff of TelOne who partnered with their employer in answer to this plight for the victims of the floods,” he said.

Deputy Minister Matiza noted that during the Cyclone Eline disaster of 2000, TelOne was actively involved in the humanitarian response that included provision of emergency toll-free lines to ensure speedy conveyance of crucial information from stricken areas.

He said Government was optimistic that the donations would be accounted for and reach the intended victims.
