Tennis Zim to submitt Davis Cup Team

Zimbabwe will battle it out in the Davis Cup Africa Group III set for Cairo from May 13 to 18 against Algeria, Botswana, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda and Zambia.

The national association had initially named a four-member team made up of Ndimande, top player Takanyi Garanganga, Mark Fynn and Tinotenda Chanakira with Martin Dzuwa coming in as the non-playing captain. However, Ndimande  who is enrolled at the University of California where he is on a four-year scholarship, has been dropped from the team as he will be competing in College games which will be held at the same time the Davis Cup competition will be running making it difficult for him to be in Egypt.

Tennis Zimbabwe vice president, Regis Bhunu said besides Ndimande all the other players have so far shown commitment for the tournament.
“There is commitment so far from all the players – Takanyi, Tinotenda, Mark and Martin will be the playing captain. We had a meeting with Garanganga’s father and he said he (Takanyi) will play. We are submitting the names on Monday,” said Bhunu.

The TZ vice-president said they had wanted to have a training camp for the team in the United States but due to some challenges they are now hoping to have the team in Egypt early so that they acclimatise and have the chance to practice together.

“It has (the camp) not materialised but what we are pushing for now is for the players to be at the venue a week before the event so that they acclimatise and practice as a team,” said Bhunu.
