A QUIET Wednesday evening turned into a nightmare in Emakhandeni suburb as three residents were viciously attacked by suspected machete-wielding gangs in a shocking spree of violence that left the community rattled and streets soaked in blood!
The brutal assaults, which occurred between 6:30pm and 8pm, happened at three separate locations.
Victims were rushed to Mpilo Hospital with gruesome injuries, including deep cuts to the head, arms and legs, the bloody aftermath of what witnesses say looked like scenes from a horror movie.
Local councillor Susan Sithole confirmed the chilling attacks.
“One man was ambushed near the tennis court as he headed home. He screamed for help and residents rushed to the scene. His family had to rush him to hospital,” she said.
The other two victims were attacked near Maunga Shops, a busy area now stained with fear.
“We found one man bleeding heavily. The ambulance took both victims at the same time. This all happened in the same section and it looks like a coordinated attack,” Cllr Sithole added.
In a disturbing WhatsApp voice note making rounds on social media, a resident claimed one victim was robbed of a cellphone, less than US$10, and his shoes.
“The machete gang is back! They’re moving in groups, attacking and robbing people. It’s no longer safe,” the resident warned.
As fear grips Emakhandeni, police are yet to issue an official statement — but residents aren’t waiting around.
Neighbourhood watch groups are on high alert, and locals are being urged to stay indoors after dark.
Of late, Bulawayo residents have been making up fake voice notes on social media, claiming attack by machete gangs. Police have urged residents to only report actual attacks as a majority of said attacks have turned out to be untrue.
