EVERYONE knew Babongile Sikhonjwa intimately, yet no one really knew him.
This may sound oxymoronic but it could be the only way to truly describe the Bulawayo Rockstar who breathed his last on Sunday 21 September.

His character was multifaceted and had so many layers that people who knew him from different roles have divergent stories to tell about him.

The common factor in all the stories is that he was fun to be around and fitted seamlessly into any occasion or crowd.

It was this versatility that made him it never strange when he was seen with anyone, from drug addicts, homeless people, ministers, entertainment royalty and the ordinary person on the street.

No eulogy or obituary will ever be written that will totally encompass the larger-than-life colossus that the arts and entertainment industry has lost.

A million stories can be put out there but each one will only be chipping off tiny flints of the real person the Bulawayo Rockstar was, without giving the total picture.

In life, goodbyes are often difficult. They force us to confront the reality of loss, change, and uncertainty.
As such, bidding farewell to the over-the-top entertainment personality Babongile Sikhonjwa was painful.

Sikhonjwa was more than just an entertainer, he was a dynamic force in Bulawayo and Zimbabwe’s creative landscape.
For his devoted fans, his passing on was not just the loss of an artiste, but the end of an era filled with laughter, joy, and unforgettable performances.

Sikhonjwa was a true multi-talented entertainer, seamlessly transitioning between roles as a singer, musician, comedian, radio and club DJ, Television producer, events promoter, and master of ceremonies.

Each role he embraced showcased his incredible range, making him a beloved figure in a variety of entertainment circles.
His ability to switch gears — smoothly moving from a heartfelt ballad to a side-splitting joke — captivated audiences and kept them coming back for more. This multi-faceted aspect of his career is what made him unique among his contemporaries.

His humour was unpredictable and refreshing, a quality that fellow arts practitioner Raisedon Baya noted.
“Sikhonjwa had a distinctive comedic style that left audiences in stitches, never quite knowing what to expect from him next.

This impulse highlighted his unpredictable nature, reflecting a personality that could morph according to his surroundings and engage different audiences effortlessly.

“Whether on stage or in a more intimate setting, he knew how to read a room, adjusting his delivery and content to match the vibe,” said Baya.

Throughout his illustrious career, Sikhonjwa’s ability to connect with a diverse audience was evidenced by his successes across various platforms.

From radio shows that became household favourites at Skyz Metro FM and Star FM, to lively performances in packed clubs — he had the innate skill to resonate with people from all walks of life.

His fans will forever cherish his approachability and wit, which made him relatable yet larger-than-life, an entertainer who felt like a friend while also embodying the grandeur of show business.

His vibrant personality did not just shine through his performances. Entertainment players and colleagues often spoke of Sikhonjwa’s dynamic presence off the stage.

“His charisma was magnetic, drawing people in and making them feel valued. He had a knack for creating memorable experiences, leaving an indelible mark on everyone who crossed his path, whether through a delightful joke, a heartfelt song, or simply a shared moment of laughter,” said Ntando Van Moyo who was introduced into Comedy by Sikhonjwa.

Today (26 September), marks the final opportunity where Bulawayo is set to come together to celebrate the life and legacy of one of its most beloved figures, Babongile Sikhonjwa, who tragically passed away on 21 September at the age of 49.

His untimely departure has left a palpable void, but the memorial service scheduled to take place at the Bulawayo Amphitheatre will offer fans and friends a chance to bid him a heartfelt farewell.

Saimon Mambazo Phiri, who co-ordinates the memorial service of Sikhonjwa, said they planned a comprehensive funeral programme which will reflect Sikhonjwa’s journey, his vibrant personality, and the profound impact he had on those around him.

The day will begin at Sikhonjwa’s home in Richmond, where friends and family will gather at 8am to pay their respects. A convoy will then carry his body through Bulawayo, making symbolic stops at pivotal locations that were significant to Sikhonjwa’s life and career.

The route will include a stop at the iconic Joshua Nkomo statue, a tribute to the historic leader who resonates deeply with the values Sikhonjwa championed, followed by pauses at Skyz Metro FM and The Red Café.

Around 11am, all roads will lead to the Bulawayo Amphitheatre, where a main memorial service will commence.
Attendees can expect an emotional yet celebratory event, running until 3pm.

The programme will feature performances, speeches, and heartfelt tributes from friends, family, and colleagues who knew Sikhonjwa for his talent, passion, and unwavering commitment to the arts.

After the memorial service at Amphitheatre, Sikhonjwa’s body will be taken to his rural home in Mlowezi, Insiza District, under Chief Ndube, where it will lie in state before his burial on Saturday, 27 September.

The Sikhonjwa homestead in Mlowezi is situated 80km along the Bulawayo-Gwanda Road, near the Glass Block Dam.
