Thank you Dr Mandaza

THERE is a sizable constituency which believes that we are only there to report about sex scandals, the failings of our celebrities and a lot of negative stuff.

Yes, we are a tabloid newspaper and it is a big part of our DNA that we should report about controversy.

But, we are also a newspaper which focuses on a lot of issues of national importance.

That is why when one of us does very well, be it in sport, academics or other fields, we celebrate such achievements in a very big way.

And, we really give philanthropists the credit they deserve because we appreciate it when someone makes a difference in the life of another person.

That is why our coverage, in our edition yesterday, was led by the heart-warming story of the medical doctor who decided to cheer the spirits of a woman whose story dominated both the social and mainstream media landscape last week.

Mavis Mada, 10, was battered in a vicious gang attack which was recorded by five women.

Her mother told the nation that she did not have the means to help Mavis get the treatment she deserves after the savage attack that she suffered at the hands of those monsters.

Yesterday, we revealed that Mavis has been offered free medical treatment, and the chance to train as a nurse aide, without even paying a cent for the three-month training programme.

The offer came from Dr Michael Mandaza of Pacific 24Hour Hospital in Mabvuku.

Dr Mandaza said his hospital will also offer free nurse aide training for Mavis and will also manage her rehabilitation as she recovers, both physically and mentally, from the severe battering she received at the hands of those who viciously assaulted her.

She was abused for four hours and the assailants even inserted three sticks into her private parts and has been bleeding continuously since the savage attack.

Dr Mandaza said Pacific 24hr Hospital is going to fund the full bill of the training; full uniform sets and also fund food and accommodation throughout the 90 days of training.

These are the kind of stories that also charm us because we believe people like Dr Mandaza should be saluted for having the heart to take care of the less privileged members of our society.

It shows that we still have a lot of people who care for others in this country and that is a very good thing. This is going to give Mavis a new lease of life and it could help her recover from her horror ordeal.

Dr Mandaza has empowered her and this will give her the chance to rebuild her life.

Psychologically, this is very powerful as it will help Mavis to know that this country is not just made up of the monsters who battered her during that savage attack.

It will show her that there are some good people in this country and that matters a lot.

Thank you Dr Mandaza.
