Throughout the country, countless individuals engage in the trade of second-hand clothes.
Among the garments available, many are not suited for everyday activities, and one wonders whether the sellers truly understand the occasions in which these outfits should be worn.
When asked about a specific garment, a seller may claim it is versatile, suitable for various occasions. Such vague responses often suggest a lack of understanding regarding the outfit’s best use.
One evening, while travelling along the Harare–Mutare highway, we encountered a peculiar sight: a skeleton dangling in the dark. From a distance, it appeared quite intimidating, leading to various interpretations among my companions.
Some speculated it was an inflatable toy escaping its owner, while others jokingly suggested it was a ghost that had emerged too early.
Questions arose: If a ghost were to appear, would it aim to frighten a passerby? Most passengers eventually concluded that it was merely an inflatable toy.
However, I was shocked when we drew closer and realised it was a man donned in a jumpsuit featuring a glowing skeleton design.
The suit emitted an eerie glow in the dark!
While some in the vehicle teased him for the scare, he simply laughed, likely accustomed to such reactions.
When asked if he had commissioned a tailor for the outfit, he revealed that he had purchased it from a friend who sells second-hand clothes.
Originally intended for Halloween, this trend is just beginning to gain traction in Zimbabwe.
In contrast, some individuals roam the streets wearing bedroom slippers, effectively transforming the city into their personal living space.
While it may seem they are unaware that such footwear belongs indoors, many consciously choose to wear them out and about.
This raises the question: Why wear bedroom slippers in public? These slippers, designed for comfort at home, pick up all sorts of dirt and grime when worn on the streets.
Navigating rough terrain, such as ghetto streets, subjects them to stones and thorns, ultimately affecting their longevity.
Similarly, the prevalence of crocs — hard plastic shoes—has surged, particularly among health personnel who have adopted them as part of their uniform.
When combined with scrub suits, this look may not attract tourists to Zimbabwe; rather, it leaves many questioning the message we are trying to convey.
Given that Zimbabwe is landlocked, with limited expansive beach areas, one wonders why this combination has become so common.
I believe in the importance of searching for knowledge and fostering an inquisitive mindset.
Crocs, akin to flip-flops or “maslippers,” are not intended as footwear for work or social engagements.
They are suitable for casual errands, dog walking, or activities like yoga.
Yet, many who wear them do not engage in these activities. One may spot someone in crocs heading to work, mistakenly assuming they are off to a swim.
This situation mirrors our earlier encounter with the man in the skeleton suit, highlighting how appearances can be deceiving.
Health issues often require clarity and prompt action. It is crucial to avoid simply following trends without understanding their implications.
For instance, when asked how long someone has been unwell, it is alarming to see them struggle to recall the duration.
Why do many people adopt a laid-back attitude towards their health?
Can someone truly ignore hunger for an extended period?
Like those who saw the man in the Halloween suit, it is essential to cultivate curiosity about our health.
Do not fall into the trap of comfort, like wearing crocs in inappropriate settings, where the message conveyed may be misleading.
Remember, health is wealth—protect it.
Always ask questions and seek clarity. Do not let complacency foster illness in your life. Embrace curiosity and take charge of your well-being!
