It’s high time we talked

WHILE the focus has mainly been on the causes and possible ways to prevent drug abuse, the effects have not really been deeply explored.

There is a growing trend of drug abuse among youth which can’t be ignored in today’s society. Youths who continuously abuse drugs often experience serious problems.

Those problems are related to physical health, mental health, academic difficulties, social relationships, and so on.

The negative effects are not confined to the abuser, they also affect family, community, and even the entire society.

Due to adolescence most youths are ignorant of the effects of drugs, so the whole society is supposed to alert them on the negative effects of drug abuse.

As much as drugs are dangerous to the person who uses them, they are as much harmful to the people around the ‘addict’. Using drugs again and again can lead to an addiction, which in turn leads to mental disorder, hallucinations, aggressiveness.

Many people who are on drugs are often involved in crimes of rape, violence and theft mostly because they find it very difficult to control themselves as they are overpowered by drugs. It’s actually very difficult to trust a person who uses drugs often because they may say things while under the influence of drugs.

Another reason that people need to pay attention to is that of economic consequences. The costs related to youth abusing drugs are really high. Financial losses suffered due to drug- related crime victims, medical treatment service, and increased burdens for supporting young adults who need financial aid for living.

Youth drug abuse is so popular because they are in the transit age, and they are experiencing lots of pressure from outside. Youths however, often turn to drugs to help relieve anxiety, to help them sleep, to enhance concentration, to help them lose weight, and to relieve pain but a blind eye has often been turned to the negative effects of being addicted to such drugs.

We cannot really deny that most youths turn to the use of drugs with a fixed positive mindset, for example a person who finds it difficult to sleep can later turn to sleeping pills. A correct prescribed dose is not a problem but the problem begins when the person continuously uses them to a point where they can no longer sleep without them. Or a person who drinks alcohol to be energetic, what happens when they can no longer stay awake without alcohol?

The focus on a person who uses drugs should not be mainly on what these drugs help with but their negative effects on the body. Too much alcohol can give one a feeling of happiness but how can we forget the fact that it leads to loss of self-control which makes one do bad things and do not really live to tell about it because they don’t actually remember. The use of drugs has an impact on how people will see you in society.

Well in today’s ‘world’ the amount of respect that one should be given is affected by drug abuse. Most children would be insulted for greeting a person who is considered a “drunkard” in a community. People should however try to communicate with youths who find themselves trapped in abuse of drugs than judge them.

Also, youths should assist themselves as much as they are assisted. They should try to understand how much harm drugs can bring to their health and relationships with people around them. It should be youths who understand that consuming alcoholic substances should be limited and they should have self-control amongst themselves.

Let’s not find our “future leaders” to be self-failing freaks who cannot control how they use drugs, or handicapped because well ‘he/she was drunk this other night and they almost stabbed him to death’ or on tonnes and tonnes of medication trying to heal what started with the use of too much drugs.

People should try to understand the youths and try to find a solution in how to help them because judging them does not lessen the negative effects; it rather adds to them.
