Theatre on Sundays becomes weekly event

, is set to run throughout the whole of 2013.

The initiative has seen the premiere of eight plays since November, including a comic theatre display by Austria based artiste Future Sibanda last Sunday which earned rave reviews.

Director of Amakhosi, Cont Mhlanga, said that the initiative would run for the whole of this year as it was a useful tool for exposing talent in Bulawayo.

“The plays will run for the 52 Sundays in the year. The objective is to showcase a new play every Sunday and thus far we have managed to achieve that goal,” he said.

He encouraged aspiring theatre practitioners in the city to come forward with their works as it was only then their plays could improve. Mhlanga said young artistes should avoid keeping their work to themselves.

“Every play is considered dead when it is a script. Only when it has been showcased on stage is a play considered to be alive. We encourage all young artistes to come forward with their work so that it can be appropriately analysed by audiences and experts whose input will only make their work better,” he said.

Mhlanga said one of the objectives of Theatre on Sundays was to give theatre audiences an idea of which plays were worth watching.

“Theatre audiences have in the past been deprived of information on which plays to see. However, with Theatre on Sundays we can separate the real theatre practitioners from pretenders and thus give people an idea of what to watch. This is something that will go on throughout the year,” said Mhlanga.

Mhlanga said they had worked on a system that would see the most outstanding plays given high ratings and poor plays also given low ratings.

Future’s performance last week was given three stars, meaning his act was now ready for filming for DVD production as it was of the appropriate standard. Mhlanga, with the help of theatre experts, determines the rating of all productions that are showcased.

On Sunday, Amakhosi will host the play, Justice, written and directed by Desire Moyo.
