There, they crucified Him

When Jesus died at Calvary and paid the penalty for sin, this sinful world had a blackout

LUKE 23:33
And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.
These four words are significant: There they crucified Him. “There,” in the holiest, most religious place in the world: Jerusalem. Jerusalem was the most religious place where they held their feasts. That is where the temple of Solomon was and where the most revered rabbis were.
“They,” the supposed holiest people in the world, the Jews; crucified (the worst penalty that anyone could suffer) Him, the Prince of Glory.
The supposed holiest people, in the holiest place, meted out the cruellest punishment on the greatest Person that ever lived. There they crucified Him.
It is not among heathens the Christ is ridiculed.
It is not among infidels that He is denied. It is mostly among the religious people where He is rejected.
Pauls says they have a form of godliness, but they deny the power of the Cross. Jesus was not crucified by infidels.
He was crucified by the clergy of His day. He is denied, not by the sinner, but by those who claim to love Him.
How much of His Word do they misconstrue, misinterpret and misplace?
How much of His doctrine do they disregard as if it was not even written? Yet they claim to be doing everything in His service. Jesus Himself said they worship Him in vain. They teach their traditions and venerate it above the Commandments of God.
He is being crucified among those who claim to love Him.
That aside, the crucifixion was necessary to fulfil Scripture. Isaiah 53:3-8 says: “He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. [4] Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. [5] But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. [6] All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. [7] He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth. [8] He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.”
While we thought He was afflicted; He was doing it for us. He was chastened for us. He was bruised so we could be healed. He was wounded so our transgression would be forgiven.
One great, important thing that Calvary means to us and the world, is, it settled the sin question, once and for all. Mankind was found guilty of sin. The penalty was so great until there wasn’t anyone that could pay the penalty. God ordained it that way, that the penalty would be so great that no man could pay it, so He could do it, Himself. Now, the penalty of sin was death. We have all sinned and came short of the glory of God. Therefore, none of us was worthy to pay the price.
When Jesus died at Calvary and paid the penalty for sin, this sinful world had a blackout. The sun went down in the middle of the day. The rocks shook, the mountains rent, and the dead bodies burst from the grave. God zeroed in and wounded that animal, called Satan, forever. Satan was knocked out, at Calvary.
The greatest price that was ever paid, was paid, and the only One that could pay it, came and did it at Calvary.
That is where the great price was paid. No man could do it. And God came, Himself, and was made human, and lived a human life, and was crucified at Calvary. Jesus went through Gethsemane and conquered every temptation any man ever stood. He went through it just like all men, and He paid the price.
Being the Passover lamb, Jesus was supposed to die in Jerusalem, the place where feasts were held. Being a lamb, He was supposed to die after being inspected for blemishes by the priests. That is why it had to be the high priests who found Him deserving of death, not because a blemish was found, but because no blemish was found in Him.
It was necessary that there they crucified Him!
