THE theft of US$120 000, which was stashed in a wardrobe in a flat in Harare’s Avenues area, illustrates the huge amounts of money which are being kept in houses in the capital.
Shepherd Nyamandi, 34, left the huge amount of cash at his workplace at Wansford Town House, which is located along Josiah Chinamano Avenue, in Harare.
The money, which belonged to Nyamandi’s employer, was stashed in a wardrobe.
Nyamandi left his office, which is a flat in the Avenues area, at about 8pm on Saturday night.
When he returned to work on Monday, he noticed that the kitchen window and burglar bars had been tempered with.
He called the security guard to accompany him to do the checks at Flat number 5 .
The duo entered the house and noticed that the thief had used an unknown object to break the bedroom door and gained entry into the main house.
Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed the case saying two other unlawful entry cases were also reported.
In Chitungwiza, Robson Tarambiwa, 30, lost US$950 at NU Pharmacy at Makoni Shopping Centre when a thief opened the roof, gained entry and stole the money which was in a cash box.
Matthew Mahole, 32, of Apparel Boutique at Makoni Shopping Centre, lost a total of US$1 600 when a thief cut open the roof, gained entry and stole five Samsung cellphones and various cell phone accessories.
“Police have noted with concern on cases involving large volumes of money being kept in either homes or company premises.
“We continue to urge people to bank their money with financial institutions,” said Insp Chakanza.
