A cashier at a local service station has been jailed nine years for stealing US$15 000 from his employer.
Jeffrey Sithole (50) was arrested by detectives while hiding at his girlfriend’s house last year.
He was out on US$200 bail and was a self-actor when he appeared before Rusape magistrate, Mrs Babra Mateko.
Sithole denied the allegations but was convicted due to overwhelming evidence.
In sentencing Sithole, Mrs Mateko said she took into consideration that Zuva Petroleum suffered prejudice from an employee it trusted so much.
Prosecutor, Mrs Melisa Saidi told the court that Sithole played around with figures paid by fuel clients before destroying some receipts to conceal the theft.
“Sithole was a cashier at Zuva Service Station. His duties, among others, included receiving cash from the company’s clients and banking it. He would also appraise the company’s management by issuing reports on a daily sales.
“He received cash payments from Parnmart Supermarket in Rusape for fuel purchased. Sithole raised receipts which had actual amounts paid by the client and issued a top copy to the client. He then destroyed the duplicate receipt from the receipt book.
“Sithole would then raise receipts with less amounts. He would take the difference and convert it to his personal use. He would report to the company authorities fake amounts as the actual amounts paid by the clients,” said Mrs Saidi.
An audit was carried out on September 22, 2023 and some anomalies were raised.
Total value stolen was US$15 837.49 and nothing was recovered.
