the dance floor as 23 bands that participated in the extravaganza continued belting out first class entertainment till the next morning.
The commemoration, which was aptly held at Magunje Growth Point – the location of the District Heroes Acre – seemed the best that Hurungwe has ever experienced, judging from both the numbers that attended and the quality of entertainment presented.
Among the 23 groups that participated were, Micron Jambo and Shanduko Express, jazz musician Never Gasho, Takesure Chikuwe and Orchestra Simbaradzo, Cecil Kapotwe and Dragon Crew,Tasvika Challengers, Voice of Hope – second-place winners in this year’s Chibuku Road to Fame provincial finals, Cranshaw Heights, Chigero Express and several other groups from within Hurungwe and beyond.
It was an occasion of real fanfare as all ages’ tastes were catered for.
With no electricity during the early hours of the night, the show continued non-stop since there was a generator on standby.
There was a moment of much applause and ululation when controversial Karoi jazz musician and prominent maize farmer Never Gasho also popularly known as “Anzou” or “Chief” took to the stage.
Gasho, who is now a born-again Christian, staged an elegant performance that left his fans crying for more.
Equally popular was the performance by a little-known group called Chigero Express. The group, which draws its name from the scissors, is a made up of barbers from Chikangwe Township in Karoi who teamed up to socialise through music. They have since acquired their full musical kit.
Those into Chimurenga and traditional melodies were also not left out as they sampled their favourite brands from a host of mbira and traditional dance groups that took over the stage the next day.
Hurungwe Senator and Deputy Minister of Regional Integration and International Co-operation Reuben Marumahoko, Hurungwe district administrator Tsana Chirau and Hurungwe Rural District Council chairman Tichaona Mathew were among the 2 000-strong crowd that attended the music gala.
