JUST a day after armed robbers set ablaze a granny’s house in Greencroft, an armed gang stormed Tynwald Primary School on Wednesday, stole some valuables and drove away in the school’s car.
Police said the three robbers overpowered three security guards, who were manning the school, and went on to ransack offices and opened the school’s safes.
During the break-in, the suspects allegedly stole a Samsung M13 and Samsung M14 cellphone from one guard, and a Huawei Y9 from another guard.
The third guard was left with his cellphone, which he later used to call the police.
One of the robbers allegedly brandished a firearm, while the other two had a machete and a garden pick.
The robbers also stole the school vehicle, a Toyota Quantum.
The vehicle was later recovered by the police.
Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed the case, said police recovered the three cellphones and the vehicle.
“Police recovered a vehicle and some valuables when armed robbers pounced at a school in Tynwald. The total value stolen is US$13 300 and all was recovered,” Insp Chakanza said.
Armed robbers have been targeting schools around the area.
Some residents say that the attack on the school coincided with the opening of the second term.
They say the robbers attacked because they were certain that there was a lot of money at the school.
