THREE men from Bulawayo have been arrested in connection with a spate of armed robberies committed in Bulawayo and Gwanda between July 2024 and 20 November 2024.
Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Abdenico Ncube confirmed their arrest.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a shoot-out incident and subsequent arrest of Moketsi Ndlovu (18), Respect Khumalo (22) and Onias Tembo (19) in connection with a series of robbery cases where motor vehicles were targeted in Bulawayo and Gwanda between July 2024 and 20 November 2024.”
“On 25 November 2024, a police crack team in Bulawayo received a tip off linking the suspects to the robbery cases,” Insp Ncube said.
He said the suspects were tracked and spotted at their hideout in Luveve suburb in Bulawayo, where they fired at detectives, leading to a shootout.
“Subsequently, the suspects were disarmed and arrested. The arrest led to the recovery of a 9mm FN Browning pistol with three live rounds as well as eight empty cartridges,” Insp Ncube said.
He said that in the first robbery, which took place on 1 October 2024, along Jungle Road, Harrisville in Bulawayo, the suspects hired a Toyota Fun Cargo vehicle from Bulawayo CBD to Harrisville and stole it.
In the second robbery, on 13 November 2024, at Reigate Township in Bulawayo, the suspects stole a Honda Fit vehicle, a cell phone, R500, and US$15.
Furthermore, in the third robbery, which happened on 20 November 2024, at Chigumira Business Centre, the suspects stole a Ford Ranger vehicle, which was later recovered at a railway crossing in Spitzkop, Gwanda.
Insp Ncube said the police are firm on fighting against armed robbery cases in the country.
“The crack teams set up by the Zimbabwe Republic Police command are alert and will ensure that the law takes its course without fear or favor,” he said.
He further said they were looking for information that may lead to the arrest of the fourth suspect, Elvis Charakupa (41) from Mpopoma suburb in Bulawayo.
