THREE traffic police officers from Murewa have been jailed five years each for abuse of office as a public officer after they were found in possession of US$975 which they could not account for by detectives at a roadblock at the 21-kilometre peg along the Harare-Domboshava Road.

Investigations had established that no traffic fines had been officially receipted, the officers had not declared the money found in their possession before commencing duty, and there was no record of their deployment in the official deployment register.

In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the conviction and sentencing of three police officers who were found guilty of criminal abuse of office following their arrest during an anti-corruption operation conducted by detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department Police Anti-Corruption Unit,” he said.

“The convicted officers are Constables, Prosper Muchangani (36), Shelton Masvande (34) and Mercy Makarimai (37.”

Comm Nyathi said the three officers, who were stationed at ZRP Murewa Traffic and deployed at Chinamhora Base, were arrested on December 21, 2025, after being found in possession of US$975 by detectives at a police roadblock at the 21 kilometre peg along the Harare-Domboshava Road.

“Investigations established that no traffic fines had been officially receipted, the officers had not declared the money found in their possession before commencing duty, and there was no record of their deployment in the official deployment register,” he said.

“The three police officers were each convicted and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment at Harare Magistrates’ Court on 24th June 2026.

“The public is urged to continue reporting any incidents of corruption, bribery and other forms of criminal conduct involving police officers and other individuals in communities.

“The organisation will continue taking decisive action against any officer who engages in corrupt or criminal activities, regardless of rank or position.”
