HUNDREDS of people who attended this year’s edition of the Zimpapers Cancer Power Walk on Saturday in various provinces where the media giant operates have given the thumbs up to the firm’s commitment to make a huge difference in the fight against cancer.

In Harare, community members and stakeholders participated in a 5-10km walk to Old Hararians Sports Club as a way of raising awareness on the national and global concern over cancer.

The same event was held in various provinces where Zimpapers operate.

This year, it was held under the theme: “Walk, Run, Cycle for A Cause”.

Speaking at the event in Harare, Zimpapers CEO, Mr Pikirayi Deketeke, saluted the sponsors that made the event possible.

“We thank you for the profound assistance that you rendered and we hope it will change the health and lives of people affected by cancer.

“The proceeds will be extended to Island Hospice for palliative care hence we are proud with this partnership,” he said.

Dorothy Muchowo, the Administration and Human Resources Officer with Island Hospice, encouraged communities to support people who are affected by cancers for their emotional, psychological, economical and mental wellbeing.

“We have been working with Zimpapers for more than seven years in fighting cancer and this has enabled us even to reach out to some communities in the hard-to-reach areas who dearly need our support.

“We have been able to buy medication and other necessities,” she said.

Zimpaper’s partnership with Island Hospice has been in existence since 2016.

One of the sponsors, Sandra Manjonjo, a pharmacist at the Harare Oncology Pharmacy, said:

“Cancer can start almost anywhere in the human body, which is made up of trillions of cells.

“Normally, human cells grow and multiply (through a process called cell division) to form new cells as the body needs them.

“When cells grow old or become damaged, they die, and new cells take their place. Sometimes this orderly process breaks down, and abnormal or damaged cells grow and multiply when they shouldn’t.

“These cells may form tumors, which are lumps of tissue. Tumors can be cancerous or not cancerous hence there is need for early detection and treatment.

“We thank Zimpapers through all their media channels for raising awareness and partnering with us,” she said.

Joshua Gocha said he joined the Zimpapers Cancer Power Walk as a way of motivating people who are battling cancer to live positively and to make sure that cancer drugs are made available to them.

Some of the sponsors include Sunny Yi Feng, FBC Bank, Nedbank, Mutare City Council, Zorro, Harare Oncology Pharmacy, Tyre Club, Munashe High and Lobels.

Meanwhile, a Harare woman, Barbra Matarutse (44), is battling breast cancer and is appealing for financial assistance for her treatment saying the high costs are weighing her down.

Currently, she is being looked after by her six-year-old daughter after her family members deserted her.

“I have been unwell since June 2022 after returning from South Africa. I managed to seek assistance from all corners but to no avail and my health is deteriorating.

“Island Hospice is offering palliative care but I need further assistance from food to medication which requires over US$300,” she said.

She wished she could join the Zimpapers Cancer Walk but she couldn’t since she remains bedridden
