Title fight for Byo Bomber

BULAWAYO-born South Africa-based cage fighter Elvis Moyo’s dream for a heavyweight title fight will be realised when he trades leather with Extreme Fighting Championship Africa (EFC) champion Danie van Heerden later this year.

The fight dubbed “The biggest stand-up battle in EFC history” will be held on October 15 at Sun City in Rustenburg, South Africa.

Moyo, whose ring name is “The Bulawayo Bomber”, was elated with van Heerden’s decision to accept his challenge made shortly after winning last month’s bill against Congolese’s Ricky Misholas.

Moyo knocked out Misholas in the second round at the EFC 50 at Sun City and immediately called the heavyweight champion van Heerden on stage to challenge him to a fight.

“That belt doesn’t belong to you Danie; it’s mine and I’m coming for it,” said Moyo soon after that fight, much to the amusement of fans.
In an interview from his Johannesburg base yesterday, Moyo said he had upped his training and would be going to Japan for a preparatory fight later this month.

“I’m over the moon that finally I’ll be able to compete for a title fight. I’ve waited for a long time to get a chance like this,” said Moyo.

“As part of my build up to the October bill against van Heerden, I will be going to Asia on July 25 where I will fight a top wrestler on July 30. It will be more of a boxer versus a wrestler, similar to that of Ali versus Inoki in the 1970s. For the Japan bill, I’m expected to shed weight from 118kg to 112kg,” said Moyo.

The former boxing heavyweight champion said he would use proceeds from the Japan fight to fund his training programme for the EFC October title fight.

Moyo has nine EFC career fights, while his title fight opponent van Heerden has 18 career fights.
