“A common purpose among artistes is key in maintaining and enhancing the growth of the creative sector.”
These were the sentiments shared by Zimbabwe’s sungura legend, Alick Macheso, after what turned out to be a historic night at Palace Gardens in Bulawayo on May 2, 2025. What was billed as another electrifying Macheso show took an unexpected, emotional turn when Jeys Marabini and Chase Skuza, two of Bulawayo’s musical icons, made surprise appearances, not as performers, but as attendees showing their support.
The moment Macheso acknowledged their presence on stage brought the crowd to a standstill. With deep humility, the Zora Butter hit-maker bowed in respect to the two revered artistes, setting the tone for a powerful call for unity in the arts sector.
“Unity among artistes can revive our industry. Seeing Jeys and Chase support my show proves that when we stand together, we can achieve great things,” said Macheso.
Fans watched in awe as the three legends embraced, igniting conversations both in and outside the venue about the importance of putting egos aside for the greater good of the creative community.
Macheso, who has long been known for mentoring young artistes and promoting live music, called the moment a “lesson for the young crop of artistes”, urging them to support each other regardless of genre or background. – Follow on X: @mthabisi_mthire
