Tollgate contractors face penalties

Transport, Communications and Infrastructural Development Secretary Mr Partson Mbiriri said the companies would be charged US$400 per day per tollgate from the deadline.
Most of the contracted companies started working on the tollgates in 2009 but have failed to complete them.
Mr Mbiriri, however, said one of the companies had improved its work rate.
“Discussions have been held with Morewear Company and they have greatly improved their pace but the penalty will still apply as stated earlier,” he said.
He said Morewear has roofed six tollgates at Esigodini, Umguza, Figtree, Malala, Treetop and Guinea Fowl.
Government was yet to decide whether or not to add more tollgates on to the country’s roads.
They are presently 24 tollgates across Zimbabwe.
Some of the contracted companies had their deadlines set for December last year but they were extended following negotiations with Government.
In March this year, Mr Mbiriri said Government was weighing the implications of cancelling contracts with some of the companies.
Transport, Communications and Infrastructure Development Minister Nicholas Goche had earlier expressed displeasure at the slow pace.
